Soon after we were married, my husband and I made our home in a small rural community south of Asheville. Since that time, we have completed successful careers in education and medicine, looking forward to enjoying our retirement. We are so thankful to have lived in such a beautiful place for over thirty years. We are also grateful that our home suffered minimal damage in the wake of Hurricane Helene. However, many in our area were not so fortunate. We have tried to do our best to help our neighbors and support groups that are coming to the aid of those who have lost so much and are suffering. We are also trying to support businesses that are now slowly trying to get back on their feet.
But often I feel so helpless.
That’s why I am dedicating the next edition of Teach. Write.: A Literary Journal for Writing Teachers to those in western North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene. I am particularly interested in stories, poems, and essays that express the resilience and fortitude of the Appalachian people. In fact, any writing that speaks to overcoming adversity would be welcome.
I will continue, however, to accept work on any theme for this upcoming edition. Although my primary interest is work centered on teaching English composition or by writing teachers and their students, I accept all kinds of quality writing by all kinds of people because I know how much writing teachers love good writing and because some writing teacher somewhere has impacted almost everyone’s life. All I ask is that you mention either your teaching experience or the impact a writing teacher has had on your life when you send me your short bio along with your submission.
